Tax IncludedFollowing the successes of the pre-war era, there was no doubting that Daimler‑Benz would return to formula racing. But it was not until 1954, with the introduction of a new racing formula, that the opportunity arose. Supercharged engines were now limited to 750 cubic centimetres and naturally aspirated engines to 2.5 litres. Daimler‑Benz opted for a naturally aspirated engine and placed the development of the car in the hands of Rudolf Uhlenhaut. The debut of the new W196 R at the French Grand Prix in Reims was a stunning success, with a 1-2 victory for Fangio and Kling. The streamlined vehicle enjoyed less success, however, at the following race in Silverstone, its streamlined body proving unsuited to this particular track. This experience led to the development of the Monoposto body with externally mounted wheels.
