The determining factor under the new regulations was no longer the maximum weight of the car but its displacement. For naturally aspirated engines the maximum was 4.5 litres and for supercharged engines 3 litres. Daimler‑Benz stuck with compressor engines and for the chassis and suspension adopted the concept of the previous year’s W125. Two single-stage superchargers delivered an increase in output. During the 1938 season a continuous output of 453 hp was achieved.
