The LP333, with its two steered front axles, was popularly known as the "Millipede". The new design was introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1958, when the German government placed statutory limits on truck dimensions, axle ratings and payloads to protect the railways from competition. The additional axle allowed a higher payload, helping to increase the cost-effectiveness of the vehicle.
