On 14.12.1929 the newspaper Allgemeine Automobil-Zeitung reported: "Among the cognoscenti there have been whispers of the "Maybach 12" for half a year now. It is now available to be purchased by "all and sundry" for the price of RM 29,700 (chassis price RM 23,000)." The hallmarks of this prestige vehicle were the newly designed 12-cylinder V-engine with an output of 150 hp (105 kW), the 7-litre displacement and the three-speed manual gearbox with Maybach overdrive transmission system. In 1930 the Maybach "12", which continued to be available to order in 1931, was followed by the improved Zeppelin DS 7 and DS 8 Maybach models (available to customers from 1931). The engine designation DS derived from the number of cylinders – "Doppel-Sechs" (double six). The DS 7 (with a displacement of 7 litres) delivered the 150 hp already achieved in 1929. The 8-litre engine achieved 200 hp (157 kW) at 3200 rpm. Both models featured the Maybach twin overdrive transmission system (DSG) with four noiselessly engaged gears which could be selected from the steering wheel without using the clutch.
