The 170 S was the first special-class car from Daimler-Benz following the war. The new model was presented to the public, along with the 170 D, at the Technical Export Fair in Hannover in May 1949. Like the 170 D, the new flagship of the passenger car range was not purely a post-war development; the style and concept of the 170 S were based on the pre-war 230 (W153) model. The 170 S had a more powerful engine than the 170 V, an improved front axle and a more spacious bodyshell. Alongside the Saloon, a two-seater Cabriolet A and a four-seater Cabriolet B were available. The Cabriolet A was considered a particularly luxurious vehicle in its day, one that catered to the highest demands and rounded off the upper end of the production range.
