Tax IncludedIn August 1961 two new four-cylinder models were presented alongside the 300 SE and the 220 SEb Cabriolet. The 190 c and 190 Dc, which were part of the 110 series, replaced the 190 b and 190 Db "Pontoon" models and, like the six-cylinder models, now featured tailfin bodywork.
The launch of the new four-cylinder models saw use of the modular principle, consistently applied by Daimler‑Benz since the start of post-war production, at its height. For the first time in the history of the company, mid-range and luxury-class model series not only used the same major assemblies and components but also had a virtually identical bodyshell.
When the new luxury-class models of the 108 series were introduced in August 1965 and the era of the shared body concept came to an end, Daimler‑Benz presented the four-cylinder models in improved form and with new model designations. The 200 and 200 D superseded the 190, which had been in production for four years.
