Product Description

The Motor Show in Geneva in March 1963 was the setting for a remarkable and noteworthy premiere: Daimler-Benz presented the 230 SL, a new sports car to replace two models in the previous sales range.
This was not an easy task. Its two predecessors, the 190 SL and the 300 SL, had been extremely popular and successful from the outset. The 300 SL in particular had become a legend in its lifetime.
In addition, despite the family likeness, the two embodied fundamentally different vehicle concepts – concepts that were difficult to combine.
The new model took something of a middle course between the two. The 230 SL, known internally as the W113, was neither uncompromisingly hard roadster nor meek urban sports car. Instead it was a comfortable two-seater touring car offering high performance and optimum driving safety.
Production of the 280 SL ended in March 1971. Its successor – the 350 SL – had a completely new design. Series production of the new model began in April 1971. Series 113 comprised three SL models, and during the eight-year production period, a total of 48,912 were manufactured. Because of the characteristic shape of the roof, the 230 SL, 250 SL and 280 SL sports car models are today generally referred to as the "Pagoda SL".
