From 1988 onwards, Mercedes-Benz again began competing as an official works team in the Group C racing series. The Sauber-Mercedes C9, which could achieve more than 515 kW (700 hp) and was the second model in the series following the C8 and before the C291, won a total of five races. In 1989, Sauber-Mercedes finally won the world championship with the C9, bearing starting number 63. The new Silver Arrows won a total of 16 out of 18 races in 1989 and 1990. The victories included the 24 Hours at Le Mans in 1989, with Jochen Mass/Manuel Reuter/Stanley Dickens at the wheel.
