On 29 January 1886 Carl Benz registered his "gas-engine-operated vehicle" as a patent. The patent certificate for DRP 37435 is considered the "birth certificate" of the motor car and coined the name "Patent Motorwagen" or Patent Motor Car in English. The world's first motor car is an independent design as part of which the engine and chassis form an organic unit. Benz designed it as a three-wheeled vehicle as he was not convinced by the fifthwheel steering conventional for coaches. Carl Benz's crucial achievement was the consistency with which he made his vision of a "coach without horses" a reality: he had the idea of a motor car, designed it, built it, had it patented, tested it, launched it on the market, produced it in series, evolved it and thus put his invention to good use. The Benz Patent Motor Car heralded a new era of individual mobility.
